Florida Primary via Twitter

During the night of the Florida primary’s politicians from the Republican Party were up in an uproar. I found an interesting take on the recent political coverage. On Storify Joe Tacopino, recapped the events of the Florida debate through what he called the tsunami zone of information Twitter.

As I read the article I noticed instead of typical story structure, the article read more like a long form timeline or Twitter timeline.  The article written by Tacopino included tweets from the Republican candidates, and multimedia pieces. After the third tweet the article showed an infograph of the Florida Primary Projections, in first was Mitt Romney, with 44.0 percent of the projected vote rang, that meant that Romney had a 97 percent chance of winning.

Trailing in second was Romney’s arch nemesis Newt Gingrich. Gingrich had 29.3 percent of the projected vote range, and only a 3 percent change of winning.  Rick Santorum came in third place with 13.9 percent of the projected vote range. And in last came Ron Paul, with 11.2 percent of the projected vote range. Neither Santorum nor Paul had a chance of winning.

By the sixth tweet there was a mentioning of Romney singing “America The Beautiful”, which was suppose to be his answer to Obama singing Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”. One memorable tweet was by Andy Borowitz  @BorowitzReport which said “If his Presidential campaign doesn’t work out Mitt Romney has a bright future as an Iron Man villain. #FLPrimary.”  Later in the tweet timeline there was a screen shot of Paul receiving an endorsement from Snoop Dogg, and the YouTube video of Romney signing “America the Beautiful”.

Being a curator seems to be a daunting task because there are so many platforms to pull your news from and at times this can seem like an issue that can definitely overwhelm some journalists. In the Storify piece the multimedia content that was used ranged from Twitter, to YouTube, so the story as able to be told both in real time based on the tweets.

From what I’ve read I think curation is the juxtaposition or combination of news outlets to tell a story from a new vantage point.

Pro: The story uses real time tweets and other form of media to keep the reading scrolling through the story, and makes for a fresh approach to storytelling. Also the article is a summary of the recent political events.

Con: Although the story has been quantified and pulled upon a variety of helpful social media, Tacopino could have include a few grafs of his own commentary and then woven the twitter feed and YouTube into the story that way.
